Although it is now considered a suburb, the Village of Glen Ellyn is a small and cozy village. Previously called Danby, the town was named Glen Ellyn officially in 1889, when stream-builder Thomas E. Hill and Philo Stacy arranged to dam a stream near town to form Lake Glen Ellyn, named for the glen where it rests and a Welsh spelling of Hill's wife's name, Ellen.

Interesting facts about Glen Ellyn include:
  • The best selling novelist of the James Bond series, Jeffery Deaver, was born in and grew up in Glen Ellyn.
  • In history, Marcellus Jones of Danby, Illinois, (now Glen Ellyn), was thought to have fired the first shot at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.
  • Glen Ellyn is the setting for the novel, The Girl Who Owned a City, by O.T. Nelson.
  • Glen Ellyn was also the setting of Winona Ryder's first movie, Lucas also starring Charlie Sheen.
  • The Fox Documentary/reality show Yearbook was filmed at Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn.
  • Glen Ellyn was also used as a setting in the movie, Witless Protection, starring Larry the Cable Guy.

  • But the most interesting fact about Glen Ellyn is that it is a quiet haven away from the bustling and busy Chicago suburban life--it is my home.
