Location of Oak Brook
Location of Oak Brook

Oak Brook, IL, is a village in DuPage and Cook Counties in Illinois. Oak Brook, IL, has a population of 8,702 people, as of the now-outdated 2000 census. Oak Brook covers a total area of 8.3 square miles. Oak Brook is a western suburb of Chicago and is well known as being the headquarters of McDonald's Corporation.

Oak Brook was incorporated as a village in 1958, due in large part to the efforts of Paul Butler, a prominent civic leader and landowner whose father had first moved to the vicinity in 1898 and opened a dairy farm shortly thereafter. Prior to incorporation, the name Oak Brook was used by local residents to distinguish their community from neighboring Hinsdale and Elmhurst, going back to the founding of the Oak Brook Civic Association almost two decades earlier (and the Oak Brook Polo Club before that).

Paul Butler's interest in sport was reflected in the Oak Brook Sports Core, which features polo fields, a golf course (which was at one time the venue for the Western Open), swimming and tennis facilities, and other recreational facilities not commonly found in a village of this size. Paul Butler died not too long ago in 1981.

Don't forget about Oak Brook Terrace

Oak Brook Terrace is a city in DuPage County in Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. The population was 2,300 at the 2000 census. Oakbrook Terrace is located in the lower Salt Creek drainage basin, lying west of the creek itself. It is a small residential and commercial city, covering approximately 1.8 square miles. For much of its existence, Oakbrook Terrace has lived in the shadow of its wealthy and prestigious neighbor, Oak Brook, from which it adapted its name. The two neighbors have had a contentious relationship for decades.

At the time of its incorporation in 1958, the town was called Utopia, and included in its acreage the proposed site of a large shopping center, but neighboring Oak Brook annexed the center and its commercial properties with state approval in 1959! That year, a disappointed Utopia changed its name to Oakbrook Terrace, indicating its proximity to the soon-to-be Oak Brook Shopping Center (and also indicating its sudden loss of self esteem, no longer considering itself a Utopia). Oakbrook Terrace attempted without success to regain control of the property from the village of Oak Brook in 1961.
