Schiller Park
Location of Schiller Park

Schiller Park, IL, is a village in Cook County, Illinois. Schiller Park was formed from a federal treaty and land grant to Alexander Robinson, aka Che Che Pin Qua, who was half "white settler" and half "Indian", and so was invaluable in securing treaties for the federal government as well as helping settlers during the Fort Dearborn Massacre. Two square miles were granted to him, most of which is in present-day Schiller Park.

Schiller Park
"Small town feel with a world at its touch"

The Schiller Liedertafel, a German singing society, frequented the area along the Des Plaines River, and the picnic groves soon adopted the name of Schiller Woods. The village incorporated in 1914 and was known as Kolze, after the main landowner and unofficial mayor of the town, William Kolze, and was eventually named Schiller Park in 1926.

In 1932, Julia Kolze, daughter-in-law of the founder, became the first female mayor in Illinois. Her avowed strategy was to employ kitchen table economics, running government on a budget the way she ran her household, and not spending more than the city earns.

In 1993, Anna Montana became the first woman president of Schiller Park since 1932, and was reelected in 1997. Like her predecessor Kolze, Montana set guidelines to eliminate debt and bring the community closer together, with its message of having a "Small town feel with a world at its touch.”

Twinkies, invented in Schiller Park
Twinkies were invented in Schiller Park

Who knew that Twinkies are what connects Schiller Park's history with that of Oak Park. James Dewar invented the Twinkie while he was working at the Hostess bakery in Schiller Park. Twinkies became a huge success. During World War II, there was a national shortage of bananas, when the ships normally used to transport bananas were requisitioned for military use, so the creamy banana filling was then replaced with a creamy vanilla filling. The business of James Dewar was later located in Oak Park.

Contrary to urban legend, the Twinkie lasts 25 days on your shelf, not "a hundred years", as you may have heard in 3rd grade. On another note, the Twinkie lasts just 45 seconds in the microwave.

The original Hostess bakery, where the first Twinkies were made, is still located in Schiller Park at 9555 W. Soreng Avenue, producing about 1000 Twinkies per minute (TPM). Several years back, Chicago was dubbed the "Twinkie Capital of the World" because Chicago has the highest consumption of Twinkies Per Capita (TPC).
